NWR Etosha National Park Dolomite Camp

About - Opened in 2011, Dolomite Camp was the first tourist facility to be built inside the formerly restricted western Etosha.

Today Dolomite Camp, with its thatched chalets, and Olifantsrus, which is for campers only, remain the only two places to stay in the remote western side of Etosha National Park which borders with Damaraland in Namibia, an environment which remains pristine and unadulterated with unique wildlife viewing.

Accommodation - Dolomite Camp features 20 Chalets built on elevated wooden decks on and around the outer edges of a Dolomite ridge.

All rooms at Dolomite are built with thatched roofs, canvas walls and large, wooden-framed retractable doors allowing spectacular panoramic views. The rooms have a tea/coffee station, desk, hair dryer and mosquito nets.

Rooms are elegantly furnished with local and regional fittings and equipment, using natural fabrics to create a natural and ethnic ambiance.

Wildlife - Desert elephant, Black Rhino and Lion are some of the more impressive mammals to be found in this area of Etosha National Park, but not to be outdone you’ll find a myriad of smaller mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants.

Large herds of zebra, giraffe and antelope wander the Etosha plains around Dolomite Camp. Black and white rhino are present in numbers, often at Klip-pan waterhole.

Rare species such as the black rhino and black-faced impala have been successfully bred here.

Activities - Wildlife excursions are conducted by professional and knowledgeable tour guides.

Apart from the normal Etosha game viewing, a special attraction of the Otjiovasondo area is the opportunity to see both the Plains Zebra and the Mountain Zebra drinking or grazing side by side and spotting the rare Sable Antelope.

For travellers making the journey between Etosha and Swakopmund, Dolomite Camp provides the ideal midway stopover, whilst allowing guests to experience the true wilderness of Damaraland.

Getting to Dolomite Camp Etosha - This is the first camp to be built in the far west side of Etosha National Park. The building of Dolomite Camp (chalets) and Olifantsrus Camp (for camping only) opened up an area of Namibia that few people had accessed before.

Depending on your route through Namibia, you will most likely access Dolomite Camp from Okaukuejo Camp (south-east) or Galton Gate (north-west from Damaraland).

Travel Distances and Times

From Okaukuejo Camp (via Anderson Gate)

Dolomite Camp is approximately 4 hours’ drive at the 60 km/h speed limit, situated 180 km from Okaukuejo Camp. The drive will take 5 to 6 hours from the Anderson Gate entrance to Etosha National Park. We advise allowing much longer, especially if you are not used to driving on gravel roads, so you can take your time. This also allows for game viewing along the way, particularly in the more game-rich section near Okaukuejo.

From Galton Gate

Dolomite Camp is approximately 45 km or 1 hour’s drive on a gravel road.

From Windhoek

The distance to Dolomite Camp from Windhoek is 590 km. Follow this route:

  • Take the B1 past Otjiwarongo (250 km).
  • Turn onto the C38 towards Outjo.
  • Continue on the C40 towards Kamanjab.
  • Turn right onto the C35 towards the Galton / Otjovazandu area (340 km).

The journey is on tar roads except for the final 45 km inside Etosha Park, which is on a gravel road.
